A national institution established under the initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), Government of India for advancing indigenous capability in ship technology, design innovation, and maritime R&D. 

ISTC focuses on developing indigenous ship design capabilities, promoting research and innovation in shipbuilding, and providing advanced training to maritime professionals.

About Us

As part of the MoPSW's four-pillared approach to revitalise India's shipping and shipbuilding sector, inline with MIV 2030 and MAKV 2047, Capacity and Capability Development initiatives are being implemented under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS).

One of the main activities proposed under these initiatives is the establishment of the India Ship Technology Centre (ISTC), an apex body responsible for the overall development of the capabilities of the Indian shipbuilding sector.

ISTC will act as a common platform for the shipbuilding industry providing access to common facilities including ship design, software, R&D in shipbuilding, and test facilities, with participation from institutions and industry for academic and research purposes. It will also oversee the regional capability development centres around the country.

What We Do

Five Focus Areas
Development of Indigenous Ship Design Capability

Facilitating development of Indigenous Design Ecosystem through collaboration with ship design firms, academia and the maritime industry. Provide advisory services to MoPSW and Institutions of National Importance.

Research & Development

Driving applied R&D in ship hydrodynamics, green propulsion, design tools, energy efficiency, advanced materials, and emerging maritime technologies including AI — contributing to India's national maritime R&D programme.

Computational and Experimental Testing Facility

Establishing national-scale computational and experimental test facilities to serve India's commercial and naval shipbuilding sector.

Training and Capacity Building

Oversee the regional capability development centers to build a pipeline of skilled workforce including tradesmen, technicians, naval architects, ship designers, and maritime engineers through structured training programmes, academic partnerships, and engagement with maritime institutions..

Indigenisation of Shipbuilding Components

Overcoming India's dependence on imported marine components including machinery and systems, through a structured indigenisation programme by mapping import dependencies, facilitating industry-R&D collaborations, supporting testing, certification and type approval of components, engaging startups and promoting a self-reliant Indian marine component manufacturing ecosystem

Collaborative Ecosystem

ISTC is collaborating with all major stakeholders of the Indian shipbuilding industry including public and private sector shipyards, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, design houses, defence establishments, academic institutions, professional bodies and industry forums to drive the maritime technology agenda.

Milestone 26 September 2025

Establishment of ISTC
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal announced the establishment of ISTC on 26 September 2025.

Milestone 29 March 2026

ISTC Incorporated as Section 8 Company
The India Ship Technology Centre was formally incorporated as a Section 8 company under the Companies Act, 2013 — marking the beginning of its operational phase as a national institution for ship technology and maritime R&D.

Milestone 29 March 2026

ISTC Commenced Operations from CSL Premises, Kochi
ISTC began operations from premises made available through Cochin Shipyard Limited at Kochi, Kerala — marking the commencement of foundational activities under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and National Shipbuilding Mission.
